Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences has been established under the State Legislature Act in 1983 and is named after Sanjay Gandhi.It was created by the state of Uttar Pradesh as a centre of excellence for providing medical care, education and research of the highest order. The institute is situated in a 550 acres (2.2 square kilometres) campus at Raebareli Road, 15 km from the main city. Lucknow is located about 500km east of New Delhi and is the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Lucknow is famous for its Nawabi culture, Mughlai cuisine and intricate chikan work, a form of fine embroidery.
The Institute provides postgraduate training to medical and nonmedical professionals. The training programmes lead to D.M., M.Ch., M.D., Ph.D., postdoctoral fellowships, postdoctoral certificate courses in various disciplines. In addition, it offers senior residency training programmes. B.Sc. Nursing course and BSc / MSc paramedical technology courses in allied sciences are offered by the Vollege of Medical Technology.The Institute is an autonomous body and awards degrees which are recognised by the Medical Council of India. The Institute functions as a State University and is member of the Association of Indian Universities and is recognised by University Grants Commission.

15/04/2023: The Parkinson's awareness walk was organized by the department of Neurology on 15th April
It was inaugurated by the acting Director of the institute Prof. S.P. Ambesh. Surgery for Parkinson disease and Surgical Techniques for DBS
were explained by Prof. Rajkumar, HOD, Neurosurgery and Dr Pawan Kumar Verma, Associate Professor respectively.
25/03/2023: The dept. of Pediatric Gastroenterology organised National conference on common gastro-intestinal and liver diseases in children.
Prof. Ujjal Poddar, Head, gave an informative talk on small bowel diarrhea in children, with special emphasis on celiac disease and role of gluten free diet in its treatment Prof. R K Dhiman, Director,congratulated the department for doing excellent work in patient care as well as research and training.26th March, the department celebrated its 15th foundation day.

On the occasion of World Kidney Day, the Department of Nephrology organized an awareness program on 18th March at SGPGIMS Lucknow. The program was inaugurated by Prof. R.K. Hemophilia Update 2023 on 17th arch 2023
The "Hemophilia Update 2023" was inaugrated by Honorable Deputy Chief Minister of UP, Shri Brajesh Pathak today at Telemedicine auditorium, SGPGIMS, Lucknow. The department of Hematology, SGPGI is the State Nodal Centre for Hemophilia Care. To train the health care workers in hemophilia care and to impart current knowledge and recent advances in hemophilia care.

PROGRAM ON ADOPTION OF VILLAGES FOR TUBERCULOSIS CASE FINDING
On the occasion of World TB Day, a program for adoption of villages near SGPGI was organized on 14th March 2023 by Dr. Richa Mishra, Additional Professor in Microbiology and Dr. Alok Nath, HOD Pulmonary Medicine.
The main aim of the event was to create awareness about the disease and adopt villages for active TB-case finding.
Department of Hepatology organized its 2nd Foundation day & half day confernce on Current Perspective in Liver Disease (CPLD) 2023 on 25/02/23
Scientific deliberations on Alcohol associated liver diseases, drug induced liver injury, vascular liver diseases and auto immune liver disease generated

First time in Uttar Pradesh thyroid cancer was removed by robotic surgery
Dr. Gyan Chand removes thyroid cancer tumor by robotic surgery. It was found that the patient had papillary thyroid cancer, which could be removed by robotic method. Dr. Gyan successfully removed many lumps, including the cancerous thyroid gland, in patient's neck, without making an incision.
