The Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences holds the distinct honor of establishing the first dedicated Department of Infectious Diseases in North India. Committed to excellence in healthcare, the department serves as a premier center for the comprehensive diagnosis, management, and research of a wide spectrum of infectious conditions.
The foundation of the department was laid under the visionary leadership of its first Head of Department, Dr. Amita Aggarwal. Following her retirement, the department continues to advance and expand its clinical and academic footprint under the expert guidance of the current HOD, Dr. Rungmei S. K. Marak.
A significant milestone in the department's growth was reached with the joining of two Assistant Professors, Dr. Ankesh Gupta and Dr. Saurav Sekhar Paul. Their addition facilitated the rapid operational expansion of clinical care, allowing the department to successfully initiate dedicated Outpatient Department services in July 2025, followed by Inpatient Department services in August 2025.
